Ted Batchelor, would-be stunt man whose annual flaming dive into the Chagrin River has become something of a local legend, could be facing a $500 fine or 30 days in jail as a result of this year’s dive.
Batchelor, 23, of Chagrin Falls, was charged with disorderly conduct, said village law director Joseph Diemert because “he presented a danger to himself, and he jumped off the bridge,” two activities that are against local ordinances.
According to Diemert, Batchelor had asked permission from village officials to perform his annual feat of setting himself on fire and diving over the natural falls into the river, and had been refused. “He asked permission to do it, and was warned not to, but he did it anyway,” Diemert remarked.
The TIMES was unable to reach Batchelor for comment.
